By disguising the messages to appear from well-known banks, online retailers and credit card companies, phishers have been able to convince up to five percent of email users to reveal sensitive personal information.

A common phishing technique involves creating the impression that there is an immediate need for personal information, which lures people to quickly click on a link to a fake website. Phishers have masqueraded as companies like eBay, Citibank, AOL, Paypal, Fleetbank, Earthlink, Visa, Barclays, Yahoo and Amazon to defraud victims.
