Phishing uses spam email to defraud victims. It is becoming increasingly common – and increasingly dangerous. Fraud protection is included in our Spam & Virus product.
Phishing attacks use spam to distribute large volumes of fraudulent, yet official looking emails designed to deceive you into disclosing your credit card numbers, bank account information, passwords and other sensitive information. By disguising the messages to appear from well-known banks, online retailers and credit card companies, phishers have been able to convince up to five percent of email users to reveal sensitive personal information. A common phishing technique involves creating the impression that there is an immediate need for personal information, which lures people to quickly click on a link to a fake website. Phishers have masqueraded as companies like eBay, Citibank, AOL, Paypal, Fleetbank, Earthlink, Visa, Barclays, Yahoo and Amazon to defraud victims.
