Back order auctions

If there are loads of people with the same back order at the same registrar, they go into an auction.

Is there a cost involved in bidding in the auction or do you only pay if you win the auction?

I'm thinking about back ordering a domain but I'm worried about having to spend loads of money and ending up without the domain anyway!

Any tips people?

Thanks
