Default .tv domains - yay or nay?

I was just having a quick read about .tv domains and was wondering what people thought about them?

Ok, so they're a the tld for Tuvalu but they seem to be quite pricey!

I'm guessing this is due to a lot of entertainment and media companies buying them up: mtv.tv anyone? Not to mention quite a few .tv websites being of a mucky nature too, ahem!

I do think .tv extentions look kind of cool but maybe I'm alone in thinking that, and they're just a big flash in the pan? Does it look like more non-media corporations might start taking them up in the near future?

I personally wouldn't use one for anything I do. But i think you're going to see a lot more with the increase of high speed broadband and more streamed video content. BBC have increased their web based coverage alot over the last 12 months so i think the media companies are starting to embrace it more - much like the way the record companies did with audio a few years ago.

As for .tv being used for any other "non-media", i don't see why anyone would. Unless Tuvala is due to become major US tax haven!

The rights to the .tv domain are owned and operated by verisign, they were bought for $50M over 10 years by a company called Idealab in 2000.
Verisign are marketing mainly to entertainment companies ".tv means exciting engaging content".

Hi, in December VeriSign announced a partnership with Demand Media, planning to market .TV for personal video-sharing "channels" and online video sites.

http://Channelme.tv/ was launched by Demand Media as an interesting marketing excercise to promote .TVs and "upload videos and create your own tv channel".

With television and web broadcasting converging more and more, it may not be such a surprise to see .TVs become more popular especially with web-savvy young adults wanting to 'brand' themselves and for whom scanning YouTube is part of their daily routine.

i've heard them described as the "Chav" domain: Think they are classy....but at the end of the day they just look silly, and all they care about is the telly.

Interesting that YouTube are not using youtube.tv as the primary...guess they favour the .com

I expect the .com was more easily recognisable. Don't forget .tv domains have only been around since about the year 2000, .coms have been around for a lot longer.

Youtube itself and the rise of rich media has only really come about in 2006 - it's still very much in it's infancy I believe.

As for it being a 'chav' domain and looking silly - wouldn't you rather have 'yourname'.tv and your videos online rather than the ridiculously long web addresses that Youtube would provide you with?
