.com/.net/.org domains enter a redemption period once the current registrar for the domain drops it, as it has expired. This can be anywhere from 1 to 45 days after the expiry date.

The redemption period lasts for 30 days and during this period you can not make any changes to the domain configuration. During this period, renewing the domain can be subject to an inflated renewal fee.

If the domain is not renewed within the redemption period it enters a pending deletion period and will be deleted from the registry. Once deleted the domain will be available for new registration.

.uk domains have a similar period called the “Suspension” period.
