Over the next 6 months you are likely to see a number of changes on all websites taking your credit card payments. This is due to some industry-wide changes, and card companies trying to crack down on card fraud.
One of the changes involves requiring the use of password protection for cards. You may have seen this on other websites before over the last few years. It works by asking you to enter your password (much like an online pin number) on a page which displays your card issuer/bank logo - in fact it is actually run by your card issuer/bank. As these schemes are likely to become more commonplace very shortly, We would like to know what your experiences are with them? If you have a Visa card, you are likely to have used Verified by VISA (http://www.visaeurope.com/merchant/h...fiedbyvisa.jsp) when using the checkout on a website. Mastercard use the MasterCard Secure Code scheme. (http://www.mastercard.com/us/persona...ode/index.html) We look forward to your responses!

Thanks for your response Allan.
Agreed, but this is a single password that you should use for all your online transactions from now on. I think this is true, especially with the increasing number of phishing emails etc. I know that some card providers are asking you to add a message to your account which is displayed when you are asked for your password. That way you can be certain that it is from the card provider.

I wouldn't say that I am a technical wizard, but I am competent with the internet (I hope!), and I have never found this a problem. It was a bit strange when i first came across it, and was asked to set up my password. But it was fairly clear that it was genuine. Ever since, I have always known it was genuine as it shows me my personal message.

I have to say, I'm not a big fan of this new system. I've got a load of passwords to try and remember as it is and here comes another provider asking me to set a password thats got to be x long and with x funny charachters in it. Just really annoything.
All that said, I guess its necessary now on the Web. Look how much Chip-n-pin has reduced fraud since it's introduction. Guess we need it online too. |
