Exclamation Online Card Payment Protection

Over the next 6 months you are likely to see a number of changes on all websites taking your credit card payments. This is due to some industry-wide changes, and card companies trying to crack down on card fraud.

One of the changes involves requiring the use of password protection for cards. You may have seen this on other websites before over the last few years. It works by asking you to enter your password (much like an online pin number) on a page which displays your card issuer/bank logo - in fact it is actually run by your card issuer/bank.

As these schemes are likely to become more commonplace very shortly, We would like to know what your experiences are with them?

If you have a Visa card, you are likely to have used Verified by VISA (http://www.visaeurope.com/merchant/h...fiedbyvisa.jsp) when using the checkout on a website.

Mastercard use the MasterCard Secure Code scheme. (http://www.mastercard.com/us/persona...ode/index.html)

We look forward to your responses!

Hm, I've tackled a Verified by Visa page before and while they are a good idea, it's slightly annoying having another password to remember. The first time I saw one of these pages I thought it was fake. More thought please Visa.

Agreed, but this is a single password that you should use for all your online transactions from now on.

I think this is true, especially with the increasing number of phishing emails etc. I know that some card providers are asking you to add a message to your account which is displayed when you are asked for your password. That way you can be certain that it is from the card provider.

I wouldn't say that I am a technical wizard, but I am competent with the internet (I hope!), and I have never found this a problem. It was a bit strange when i first came across it, and was asked to set up my password. But it was fairly clear that it was genuine. Ever since, I have always known it was genuine as it shows me my personal message.

This has been in place on other sites for some time hasn't it? I know when i buy off of ebuyer they have always had it. I guess like anything there is always some risk that someone could try and spoof it for phishing purposes. You just need to make sure that you trust the website that you are using.

Default Annoying

I have to say, I'm not a big fan of this new system. I've got a load of passwords to try and remember as it is and here comes another provider asking me to set a password thats got to be x long and with x funny charachters in it. Just really annoything.

All that said, I guess its necessary now on the Web. Look how much Chip-n-pin has reduced fraud since it's introduction. Guess we need it online too.

I have to say I like the fact that I know that there is a password protecting all my online payments though. If every website had to use this scheme then I would like the feeling that if I lost my card, or someone got hold of my card details somehow, that they could not use it online....for that reason I am happy to have another password - I think I am unlikely to forget it as I use it far too much!

How many attempts will I get to log in if I accidentally use the wrong password?

Thanks

Nathan
