When looking to buy domain names, what would one check for in a hosting company to ensure they are reputable?

I don't know about anyone else, but in general I always find it quite calming to find a contact number and contact details that work on the website, so at least I know that if anything goes wrong there's somewhere or someone I can get in touch with! I can't stand those fly by nights who you have to spend an hour and a half on their website just looking for an address, grrr! >:
