Why do you have to keep re-buying your domain name every other year, why is it not yours permanently once purchased?

Different domain extensions can be registered for different periods of time, for example all .uk domains can only be registered for a 2 year period at one time, where as .com domains can be registered from 1 to 10 years.

Once registered in affect you’re the legal registered owner for life as long as the renewal fees are kept up. As the registered owner you will always have first refusal over the renewal.
