Default Sub-Domain

I notice other questions about this, excuse my ignorance, as you can tell I'm new to all this but what is a Sub-Domain and do I need one ?

A subdomain is commonly a prefix on your domain name eg. news.google.com or mail.yahoo.com where google.com or yahoo.com is the domain name.
