How would I go about re-naming my existing domain name, would I have to buy a completely new one?

Once a domain is registered you can't exchange it for a different domain. From when a domain is registered there is a small period of time in which you can back out of the registration, however with some domain extensions there may be a registration fee that can not be refunded.

Generally speaking once the domain is registered you're the legal registered owner of the domain for the full registration period.
