Default DNS settings for web forwarding to work?

Edit: meant to say "DNS settings for mail forwarding to work?" in the title.

Normally I host my own mailserver, but having lost my DSL line I'd like to set up mail forwarding to catch any mail that would otherwise keep retrying using the one and only MX record I've currently got configured (my offline mailserver).

What is required for domainmonster's mail forwarding to work?

I've tried doing this:

An MX record pointing to inbound.mydomain.com.emailmx.com.
A CNAME record for mail, pointing to mail.mydomain.com.emailmx.com.

(where mydomain is substituted with my domain name)

I've done this and then configured some forwards using the domainmonster control panel, but when I've sent mail to those addresses, they seem to blackhole (never forwarded to the specified destination).

I do have the MX record for emailmx.com. as a lower priority than my mailserver, so when it comes back online it should receive the mail in preference to the forwarding service.

Am I missing anything?

Or have I horribly confused everyone?
